    Descriptions from Live History

    Behind the Glass

Something isn't right here. That book is out of place. There is a card in the display case, but no item behind it. There are antiques in the incorrect place; and artefacts that are standing wrong side up. Clearly, the venue needs your help. As curators of other nearby museums, you are called to the venue after hours in order to help figure out what is causing these disturbances.

Once inside, you are greeted by one of the exhibits that has come to life. They are happy to show you around and share tales about the other exhibits. As you hear stories from their lives, it becomes clear that one of them is the culprit behind these disturbances. The question is, which one? Succeed and you will find yourself promoted. Fail, and you may find yourself trapped behind glass forever.

Live History – who are they?

Live History is a theatre company that specializes in bringing your local history to life. Our shows take audiences on a one-hour adventure through time. Audiences will experience a full tour of the location while interacting with the characters, and assisting them in solving an urgent issue that can only be resolved with the audiences' help.

Our team works hard to research and customize each show, driving tourism up for each event and giving residents the opportunity to see their own history return to life. It also provides an opportunity for local actors to be involved. Join us as we return to the past, and hear lost voices speak once again.

    About

Crawford Lake, Ontario, has been all over the news recently with the announcement that it has been chosen as the site for the proposed Golden Spike: the marker for the start of a new geological epoch, the “Anthropocene.” But have we indeed entered a new epoch triggered by human impact on the Earth system? What are the indicators for that and what evidence does Crawford Lake provide? How does clear evidence of anthropogenic impact – as early as the late 13th century – inform the definition of the proposed Anthropocene Epoch? Along with these questions, we need to investigate what it means to live in the Anthropocene. Is the term a misnomer? Are all humans responsible (although they have all inherited the same planetary conditions)? And, more importantly, what can we learn from this scientific advancement and how may it guide our actions moving forward?

    Speaker Bios

Christine Daigle is Professor of Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Humanities as well as Director of the Posthumanism Research Institute at Brock University. An expert of existentialist philosophy and feminism, her research in recent years has focused on the notion of vulnerability, including environmental vulnerabilities. She has contributed work on environmental humanities and questions revolving around the Anthropocene and the concept of extinction.

Francine McCarthy is Professor of Earth Sciences and is also appointed to the Department of Biological Sciences and the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre at Brock University. Additionally, she is a Research Associate at the Royal Ontario Museum and a voting member of the Anthropocene Working Group. She is a micropaleontologist whose research has focussed on lakes as natural archives of environmental health, most recently on the record of the Great Acceleration and Cold War on varved sediments of Crawford Lake to define the Anthropocene as a geological epoch.
