Anthony J. Smith Arts & Culture Wall Of Fame

Anthony J. Smith was born in 1932 near London, England, and emigrated to Canada in 1962 order work as a technical artist on the Avro Arrow project; by the time he arrived, the project had been cancelled. Consequently he formed a progressive Industrial/Technical graphic arts studio with a photographer and other artists. When Tony retired and moved to the Niagara Region in 1998, the beauty of this area sparked his enthusiasm and the intricate sense of detail he had developed as a technical illustrator. He has created many paintings in several different media of Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal, wineries, and other sites across the Niagara Region. As a member of the Niagara District Artists Association, he was first the Bulletin Editor, Treasurer, exhibition Chairman, and eventually served as President for five years. He organized the reinstated Halloween Paintout for many years, contacting schools in Niagara Falls and presented the Cameron Cup trophy to the school sending the most participants between the ages of 8 to 14, handing out prize money and Halloween grab bags to all attending. He has been a member of the then Arts & Culture Commission and was presented the prestigious Stamford Collegiate Alumni Association Award in memory of Barbara Frum for outstanding contribution to arts and cultural opportunities in this community. Tony has served as board member of the Niagara Falls Art Gallery, and belongs to many art groups in the Region. He has had several one-man exhibitions and has taken away numerous awards in regional art shows.
