Express your creativity with this seasonally-themed workshop and create Fall Corn!

Learn tips from artist Diane Ptolemy, and step-by-step, build your own masterpiece, on a pre-traced image with watercolour paint and pencils.

All supplies will be provided.

Watercolour Workshop: Fall Corn (SOLD OUT) information

Instructor: Teresa Seaton

Learn the skills for copper foiling stained glass.  Begin by learning the skills to cut, grind, foil and solder while fabricating a Woodland Poppy window sun catcher.  This course is a hands-on media. Hand building strength is required. Finished sun catchers will be taken home but not other tools.

When: September 9^th, 2023 10am – 4.30pm (6-hour workshop with half hour break for lunch. Please bring your own lunch.)

Cost: Members $80.00 and non-members $ 90.00 (Note: Spots are limited – 10 students max)

Instructor Bio: Teresa’s uniquely sculptural fine art stained glass is an artistic trademark featuring multi-layers of glass panels with spun wire. Her use of a refined colour pallet creates a mood and atmosphere that is distinctive to Teresa, making her one of Canada’s most notable emerging Fine Art Stained Glass Artists.

Workshop to include:

• Safety: Students will begin the class by going over safety procedures.
• Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes, and bring a mask if you are sensitive to smells/fumes.
• Proper procedures to cut glass: Practice items will be provided.
• Pattern and proper cutting sequence:  Feather patterns will be provided and the students will be shown the proper sequencing of cuts. Each piece will be ground to fit perfect to the next piece.
• Foiling:  Once all pieces are cut out and fitted properly students will be shown how to foil. The foil should fall evenly on each side of the glass. A fid will be provided to secure the foil to the glass.
• Flux:  Students will be shown how to apply flux.
• Soldering:  Students will be shown how to tack the glass pieces together. The proper procedure for finishing soldering will be demonstrated. Students will have time to solder. Sun catcher will be flipped and flux applied and soldered to other side.
• Edging:  Solder will then be applied to edges of sun catcher.
• Finishing: Students will then be shown how to attach a hanger to sun catcher. Wash and dry sun catchers. 
• Patina and polish:  How to apply patina and polish.

The annual Community Art Project is back this summer at the Niagara Falls History Museum, led by local artist Rachelle Wunderink. Niagara Falls residents are invited to participate in free community art workshops at the Museum in July, August and September. The project, titled 'It Takes a Village', will be an amorphous city made up of individually collaged houses that will be installed throughout the Niagara Falls History Museum entrance for the Niagara Falls Night of Art on September 21. The peoject is inspired by individuals who struggled in the isolation of their homes throughout the pandemic. This art installation reflects the resilience of Niagara Falls Residents, representing the strength in our community. Community participants are invited to come and collage their own house selecting images that serve as a home comfort, or a memory. Take advantage of this awesome opportunity to connect with others and collaborate on an art installation!

UNDERSTANDING THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION REPORT – WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

The Truth and Reconciliation Report was released in 2015.  It was a comprehensive report completed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and led by Dr. Murray Sinclair.  The report included significant and important recommendations intended to address the devastating legacy of the residential school system on generations of indigenous children, their families, and communities.  This presentation is intended to provide a greater understanding of the report and developments in the years since its release toward Honoring the Truth and Reconciling for the Future. 

About Dr. Williamson:

Dr. Pamela Williamson is a member of the Moose Deer Point First Nation and from the Sturgeon Clan. After a lengthy time working in both health and post-secondary education sectors and from her personal experience, Dr. Williamson is able to offer keen insights into understanding the realities of living experienced by First Nations people. Dr. Williamson is a strong advocate of the Truth and Reconciliation recommendations as a means to increase understanding and positive and productive relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous people of Canada.

Reflections on Indigenous Law, Treaties and Nationhood in response to the Universal Declaration of Indigenous Rights, Government Policies and Haudenosaunee Tenacity. The Haudenosaunee are attempting to be the first Indigenous nation to be part of the Olympic family. As the game of lacrosse is being considered for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Haudenosaunee are seeking recognition of their nationhood on the international stage in order to play a game they invented. Win, lose or draw, it will be a great test about the survivability of Haudenosaunee nationhood.

About Richard Hill:

Richard Hill is a Tuscarora Citizen of the Haudenosaunee, a Confederation of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora Nations. He has been responsible for recovery of wampum belts from museums and historical societies, uncovering the history they carry, and sharing these teachings so that the lessons of history are not forgotten. Hill has worked for the National Museum of the American Indian, the State University of New York at Buffalo, Six Nations Polytechnic and now is the Indigenous Innovations Specialist at Mohawk College, Hamilton, ON.
