Image of Jennifer Garrett

Jennifer Garrett was born in Sudbury, Ontario, in 1942. Her family moved to Niagara Falls when she was four where she attended Montrose Public School, Princess Elizabeth Public School, and Stamford Collegiate. In 1964, Jennifer moved to Toronto for a short period then to Atikokan, Thunder Bay, Sudan, Egypt, and Croatia. Jennifer was a multitalented and extremely prolific artist. She produced and performed in the areas of painting, drama, writing, and voice. Garrett’s artistic accomplishments were as varied as they were vast. Jennifer was featured in over 60 one person juried public Gallery Exhibitions in Canada and Internationally; received two Arts Travel Grants from both the Ontario Arts Council and the Canadian Council for the Arts; four time Jury Member with the Ontario Arts Council; served as artist-in-residence in Croatia, Sudan, and Egypt; was a prolific singer and songwriter; performing and produced countless theatre productions. Artwork by Jennifer hangs in galleries across North America, Europe,
and Northern Africa. Notably her work is in the Esso Permanent Collection in Alberta & the Canadian Embassies in Croatia & Serbia. Jennifer was very generous with her talent, teaching, and getting involved in local and international art scenes. Within hours of arriving in a new city she would often have already arranged to give a concert and she would be connecting with all of the local artists immediately. She spearheaded community art everywhere she went including a centre for the arts, festivals, and theatre groups. Sadly Jennifer had a stroke while picnicking with her family in Croatia and died 4 days later on July 4th, 2013. The beauty of her life continues on in her art and in the many friends she cultivated through her art. Her life was art, as much as, art was her life.
